Therapy For Panic Disorders
New Client SCREENER

Panic Disorder

Panic disorder is diagnosed in people who have abrupt and repetitive attacks of fear that last for several minutes or longer.  These are called 'panic attacks' and are identified by a fear of catastrophe or losing control even when there is no real crisis. These panic attacks occur unexpectedly, sometimes even during sleep, and many people with panic disorder worry about and fear the possibility of having another attack. Panic disorder is a serious condition that can affect daily functioning and overall quality of life.

TREATMENT: Evidence-base psychotherapies can help you overcome panic disorder
(minimum 6-10 therapy sessions recommended). Available treatments include:
Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT): Teaches you how to challenge/change problematic thought patterns and unhelpful behaviours that contribute to symptoms.
Exposure therapy: Involves gradually exposing you to the situations and physical sensations that you fear and not avoiding the experiences.
Relaxation training and behavioural activation: Involves regularly practicing breathing exercises, relaxation exercises, and engaging in activities that are relaxing, enjoyable, or useful.
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MCBT): Teaches you how to be in the present moment, on purpose, in a non-judgmental way.
